#4 – SAMURAI BRIDE

Things seemed to be going so well for Muneakira Yagyu, the hapless warrior inexplicably stuck with the ability to awaken a girl's latent samurai powers with a single kiss. Just having to deal with the impossible Jubei - who fell out of the sky and into his arms - would be more than most men could handle, let alone being the target for a half dozen more. On top of that, he had just defeated a minion of a great evil, so was it too much to ask for a little break?

Apparently, it was! The great evil is back, but that's the least of the problems complicating Muneakira's life. After all the girls he kissed, the inevitable has finally happened… someone is getting hitched with a samurai girl! It's going to be a REALLY old fashioned wedding and any resistance by the groom will be totally ‘feudal’ in SAMURAI BRIDE!

This 12 episode follow up to the smash series SAMURAI GIRLS will be available on home formats in 2014.

Thanks to our friends at Hopscotch, we've got five copies of the action packed NOW YOU SEE ME on DVD to give away.

Now You See Me pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against "The Four Horsemen", a magic super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. The Four Horsemen pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, and then funnel the millions of stolen profits into their audiences bank accounts, while staying one step ahead of the law.

FBI Special Agent Dylan (Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes-and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he's forced to partner with Alma (Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to Thaddeus (Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians' crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be... magic?

#5 – THE WIND RISES

Monday 16 December, 2013 – The Australian poster and trailer for the latest film from Studio Ghibli, THE WIND RISES, are now available. THE WIND RISES has been announced as the final directorial effort from Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. The film will release in Australian cinemas on February 27, 2014.

At a press conference earlier this year in Tokyo, Miyazaki announced he would retire from filmmaking, THE WIND RISES being his final film. Miyazaki will continue at Studio Ghibli, focusing on other creative projects such as exhibits at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo and manga projects.

In a statement delivered at this press conference, Miyazaki commented “I know I've mentioned I'm retiring many times in the past, so I know that many of you might think, oh again. This time is for real.”

THE WIND RISES is a project five years in the making, and features the hand-drawn animation for which Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have become synonymous with.

THE WIND RISES was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

Hayao Miyazaki has been animating and directing films since 1979’s The Castle of Cagliostro, and his most celebrated titles include Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away (Academy Award winner – Best Animated Feature), Howl’s Moving Castle & Ponyo.

Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4) Review

$

I'm about to make a frank admission which may discredit any semblance of gamer cred that I currently possess; I've never played any of the Call of Duty games. Nope, not one. This is for no other reason than because I've never particularly enjoyed straight laced war shooters. If it hasn't got dragons, aliens or some other form of fantastical setting, I'm probably not interested. Enter Call of Duty: Ghosts. From the moment I saw that Astronaut shooty action, I knew I had to try it.

Starting off in a "world gone mad" setting, CoD:G instantly piqued my interest with it's truly cinematic presentation. Running through crumbling buildings, at this point weaponless, gave cause for a raised heart rate and a handful of cuss words. Being closely followed by a zero-g encounter really got the blood pumping and started to show off those gorgeous next-gen graphics. Across the next few levels, CoD:G surprises with a variety of different locations and different types of engagement. This is so much better than I ever expected.

I'm generally a run n' gun type of player, and no I'm not referring to the 1993 basketball game from Konami. So CoD:G delivers in spades but what it also does is force you to engage in more clandestine operations, sneaking by guards and tanks without causing alarm. Usually these types of operations are executed at the hands, or paws, of the K9 unit named Riley. Thank the maker that they didn't name that German Shepherd "Rex" or "Fido". Using the dog is more fun than it should be. Sneaking by your enemy is one thing but chasing them down and tearing out their jugular is sadistic fun at its best and earns the game its MA15+ rating.

Striking a great balance between stealth and shooty goodness, CoD:G doesn't skimp on the action and has many moments that are impressive albeit completely unrealistic. Astronauts firing off rounds in a pressurised cabin: Check. Scuba divers popping off full mags left right and centre: Check. Like a great action movie, these sort of over the top set pieces are as ludicrous as they are engaging. As long as you can suspend your disbelief and replace it with unbridled acceptance, you're guaranteed a good time.

The story itself is very much akin to "America, F&*# YEAH!" but this time the "threat" isn't one that you'd necessarily expect. What we see is a united South America breaching the border and attacking the USA with its own toys. Granted, this is just another story about 'Muricans defending 'Murica but this time, the 'Muricans are actually getting their butts kicked. This in itself is a refreshing change for the norm and shows a touch of humility at the hands of writer Stephen Gaghan, director of the Oscar nominated Syriana. Add to that an awe-inspiring and pulse pounding score by composer of The Town, David Buckley, and you've got an incredibly cinematic experience which takes the best parts from first person shooters and wraps it up with a silver screen bow tie. In short, Call of Duty: Ghosts is one hell of an experience.

As a "noob" when it comes to the world of CoD I only lasted a few minutes on multiplayer servers before being summarily and relentlessly slaughtered all the while having my sexuality, and my mothers morals, questioned. That said, the single player campaign is brilliant fun and well worth the price tag by itself. If you're already a CoD multiplayer, you know what you're in for. Graphically,  CoD looks like a very strong idea of things to come and if games are looking this fantastic on launch, imagine what we can expect in years to come!

Call of Duty: Ghosts is available now on PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Review

NEWSTEAM ASSEEEEEMMBLE!! After a few years in the wilderness, Ron Burgundy and the Action News Team are back for their long-awaited sequel to Anchorman (2004). I must declare something, upon first viewing I wasn’t particularly impressed by the first Anchorman. Frankly I just didn’t really get it, the silliness and disjointed dialogue kind of threw me for a loop. But on subsequent viewings it blossomed into one of my favourite comedies. I’m hoping that this is also the case with Anchorman 2 because currently I’m a little underwhelmed by it.

Set about ten years after the original film, Ron (Will Ferrell) and Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) are co-anchors of their local San Diego News. They are married and have a child, Walter (Judah Nelson, who is a terrible child actor). After a string of blunders Ron is fired and Veronica is given the prized primetime anchor position, sound familiar yet? Ron is recruited to join the first ever 24-hour news station, so he quickly rounds up the gang and they head to New York. The guys get themselves embroiled in wacky hi-jinks befitting of the Action News team. It’s essentially a fish out of water story as the guys trying to survive in the big city.

The problem with this film is that Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay who share the writing duties have taken any elements that worked in the original film and cranked them up to eleven. The biggest change being the character of Brick (Steve Carell). It’s as if he is now a caricature of himself, with everything he says being more absurd and even his mannerism being gross exaggerations of what he did before. Whatever happened to less is more? This typifies the bulk of the changes made for this film, it’s the self-indulgent over-the-top-ness of it all which prevented me from enjoying myself, coupled with sequelitis where they had to squeeze everything in from jazz flute, to Baxter saving Ron and even another News team battle sequence. This just doesn’t have the charm or execution of the first film. The film definitely too long. It weighs in at two hours which is half an hour longer than the first one, and an edit may have just tightened the plot up a little.

That being said, there are enough laughs throughout this film which keep things ticking along. The film is littered with little pockets of absurdity that only Will Ferrell is gutsy enough to put up on screen. The highlight of which is Ron nursing a certain creature back to full health, which I won’t spoil as I don’t think I could do it the justice it deserves. The film also manages to sneak in some sly commentary about modern day news outlets, however it doesn't take it much further than what was already established in the first film. In a similar vein the film lampoons the excesses of the 80s, just as the first film looks at the boozy antics of the 70s. Something tells me though, that this is far more fun for these guys to make than it is for us to watch.

For lovers of Anchorman, go into this film with an open mind and just enjoy it for what it is, a few hours of the gang being back together. You’ll still have the original to treasure and you may even pick a few more one liners to whip out over social media now and then. Hopefully the next time I watch this film it’ll have had time to develop a little more for my taste buds.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, hits cinemas this Thursday. If you see the film and agree or disagree feel free to drop a line below.

Transformers Rescue Bots: Hot Shots Review

$
0
0
Long time readers of Geek of Oz will know that I'm a sucker for those shape shifting mechs known as Transformers. Ever since I was a kid they've held a special place in my heart so, to be honest, I was bound to enjoy Transformers Rescue Bots. Hell, I even liked the Michael Bay films in spite of how terrible they are!

Optimus Prime issues a call to all operational Autobots for urgent assistance on earth. Answering the call are Heatwave, Blades, Chase and Boulder who arrive in the US state of Maine to the news that they are the last remaining Rescue Bots. Unsure as to whether the new team members are ready to battle the Decepticons, Optimus tasks the Rescue Bots to work undercover, assisting the local townsfolk whenever they're in need.

The first thing that strikes you about Rescue Bots is that this is especially for young kids. Sure, cartoons in general have a tendency to be targeted towards a younger demographic but this particular series is probably aimed at 3-5 year olds with a identifiable Playskool feel which is in line with the series' toy releases. The simplistic character designs are far removed from the designs of Michael Bay's films and are more recognisable as Transformers than their feature film counterparts. The trade off for such simple yet cool looking designs is that the transformations are generally glossed over wherein the robot just becomes a car without going through each step of the process. The only real downside to this is that we aren't treated to the usual transformation sound that we all know and love.

The animation quality of Rescue Bots is quite good although not quite as showy as you'd expect from the likes of Ben 10 or the latest Avengers series. This is understandable considering the target audience but may lose the interest of some older viewers. Bright, primary colours are sure to grab the attention of young ones with the eventual pay-off of a "message of the day" ending not too dissimilar to G.I. Joe's "Knowing is half the battle..." sign-off. The messages included in each episode aren't particularly subtle and are instead handled with a ham, or rather steel, fist. Again, considering the target audience, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's great to see a TV program that goes out of it's way to remind kids of important life lessons. However, it's a bit of a pity that there are so few female characters in the mix.

This first volume is reasonably well priced at just under $13 for 5 episodes including the introductory Hotshots, Family of Heroes, Under Pressure, Flobsters on Parade and The Invasion of Griffin Rock totally around 2.5 hours of colourful and wholesome fun. Sure, this series is aimed at little tykes but long time Transformers fans are sure to get sucked into a vortex of nostalgia. It doesn't feature epic battles or sweeping story arcs like Generation 1 did but what it does deliver is a series that somewhat bridges the gap between pre-school and kids TV. Not too kiddy, not too grown up, just right.

Transformers Rescue Bots: Hot Shots and Cody on Patrol are both available now. Transformers Rescue Bots: Return of the Dino Bot is available from the 5th of February 2014.

Frozen - Review

It’s somehow therapeutic to think of Disney’s latest animated film Frozen whilst Sydney is in the grip of a heat wave. I’m so there right now … amongst the icicles, the mounds of powdered snow and general winter wonderland that is this film. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Frozen is a highly entertaining film which harkens back to the golden era of Disney. Something has definitely changed over at the mouse house. Over the past few years they’ve rekindled their mojo with films like Tangled and Wreck-it Ralph. It’s really positive, considering they now control such iconic brands such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Marvel Universe.

Frozen falls squarely in the Disney Princess genre. The story is an adaptation of the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, in which two Princess sisters Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa(Idina Menzel) are orphaned at a young age. Anna is cursed with the ability to freeze anything she touches and is kept locked away from Elsa for most of their lives. When both girls come of age they are forced embrace the world and all its challenges with differing results. Anna’s powers get the best of her and she creates a magnificent ice-age-like world. Elsa is forced to team up with a local merchant, Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and a hilarious snowman, Olaf (Josh Gad) in order to save Anna from herself.

Easily my favourite aspect of this film is the music. It’s a musical with the impact of such classics as The Lion King or Aladdin with tunes that you can’t help but get whisked away by. There’s an overwhelming sense of joy, which is what I want from Disney films. This just feels, well … right. Olaf’s introduction is one of the funnier songs I’ve heard in a long time and was a great counterweight to the grander numbers belted out by the sisters. I’m so close to buying the soundtrack, which may become a cheeky Christmas present to myself.

Nearly every year, I have the same thought when watching animated films. It’s that moment when I realise just how far the technology has come and how astonishing the graphics now are. Frozen is my new benchmark for what animation should look like. The rendering of the snow and ice effects are truly inspired. I’m keen to see what this team can come up with next, perhaps even creating enter new worlds and exotic environments.

For anyone looking to take the kids to an upbeat, engaging film over the Christmas holiday, then this is the film you’re looking for. I’m impressed that young women are finally getting strong on-screen role models to look up to. It’s not about which boy they’ll settle down for, but that women can save the day too. Just like Katniss Evergreen in the Hunger Games series. Frozen shows why Disney is still highly relevant.

Get a Horse!

Frozen is accompanied by a short film titled Get a Horse! featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse as they are being harassed by a local bully. Whilst I don’t want to spoil the jokes involved, I’ll just say it’s refreshing for Disney to make a self-aware even self-deprecating short film which spans the history of animation whilst keeping within the slapstick parameters of cartoons from yesteryear. Keep an eye out for the Marvel tie-in.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Review

Author David Mitchell once charitably said of the film adaptation of his novel Cloud Atlas, “any adaptation is a translation … and I believe a degree of reinterpretation for the new language may be not only inevitable but desirable…”. So indeed were my sentiments about Peter Jackson’s stripping back of (and in many places adding to) The Lord of the Rings books to create his masterful trilogy concluded some eleven years back. The abandonment of plot-irrelevant or dramatically redundant scenes (novel fans will understand this to mean most notably Tom Bombadil or the Scouring of the Shire) and the embellishment of the novel’s only lightly-treated romantic plotlines served to create a film that was tauter and more emotionally engaging.

Suffice it to say, I believe straying from the source material isn’t always heretical butchery; often its just good, audience-minded discretion.
I say all this because any Tolkien fan sitting down to review The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug will need to make a choice between Tolkien loyalism and an objective critiquing of the film per se.  I lean towards the latter camp, but with a proviso: if you're going to do a number on the source material, you better have good reasons for it.
Aside from the ostensible main storyline, which follows the dwarves’ continued journey to claim their erstwhile mountain home, the latest installment develops plot lines scoured from passing references in the book, from appendices of the broader Tolkien canon and in some instances they are entirely invented. These additions have their place and many of them work, particularly the film’s inter-special love triangle subplot, which serves to raise the emotional stakes for the inevitable final showdown in the third film.
Where this film runs into trouble is using the new content to achieve connectedness to the earlier, but plot-wise chronologically later, Rings franchise. In particular, the revelation of the Necromancer as Sauron (which dare I say only the most obtuse viewer would have failed to identify during An Unexpected Journey), would have been better placed at the closure of the final film, as a chilling tie-in to the story we know will follow.  ‘Imply’ rather than ‘tell’ would have been a more suitable mantra for an audience already educated in the overall story arc, off the back of the three earlier films.
These departures distract screen time that could have been more wisely applied. Most obviously lacking is an investment in character development. Thirteen dwarves? After the second installment, had I not been an avid re-reader of the book, I’d have struggled to name more than three. Thirteen might sound like a lot to get through, but ask yourself: after watching the first 25 minutes of Ocean’s Eleven, would you have had any trouble recounting the personalities in play?  The point is, after two films and 330 minutes, it could have and should been achieved.

It might sound like we’re off to a bad start here, but actually, Desolation is a superior film to its predecessor.  There is a genuine sense of peril and consequence in the action scenes that was somewhat lacking in the more cartoonish action of the first film. Also, more as a symptom of its being a middle-chapter installment, there is less of the narrative-style exposition that some viewers found dragging in An Unexpected Journey.
Like all films in Jackson’s Tolkien franchise, the sense of place is the most enveloping feature of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. With some superbly realised new sets, including the elf king’s woodland realm and the shanty-town-on-stilts Laketown, fans will find new and wonderful places to explore in their beloved Middle Earth with a satisfying level of detail, even if it doesn't quite achieve the majestic world scope of the Rings films.
Despite the realness of the physical surrounds, unfortunately the CGI baddies don't deliver the required physical menace. They are a little weightless and insubstantial, compared to the brutal physicality of the orcs in the Lord of the Rings films; which serves as a timely reminder that when it comes to computer imaging technology, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
The film makes up for it however in the final confrontation with Smaug the fire-breathing dragon, long term resident of the mountain the dwarves are trying to reclaim.  How it is possible to render a mythical creature – without any real-life example to follow – so convincingly and terrifyingly, well … animal, is beyond me.  It's like the CGI team working on this film all got together and said “don’t mind the measly orcs, lets make this guy the true embodiment of terror”. And how.
Performances by Richard Armitage (as dwarf-in-chief Thorin), Martin Freeman (as hobbit Bilbo) and Ian McKellen are as fine as ever. Benedict Cumberbatch, Freeman’s co-star from the BBC’s Sherlock series, features as an effective but unrecognizable voice of Smaug. A slightly more chiseled, less elfin Orlando Bloom is a welcome return to the franchise as elf prince Legolas.
Despite the plot misadventures, overall, the artful high-gloss production style of Peter Jackson fuses enjoyably with J R R Tolkien masterful story-telling in another enjoyable installment in the Hobbit tale. What’s more, compared to An Unexpected Journey, I left this film with far more heightened expectations for what is to come.
